that Umm Sulaym was with Abu Talḥah on the day of Ḥunayn. Umm Sulaym had a dagger with her, so Abu Talḥah said, “What is this you have with you, Umm Sulaym?” She replied, “I have taken it so that, if any of the disbelievers comes near me, I may rip open his belly with it.” Abu Talḥah said, “O Prophet of Allah, do you not hear what Umm Sulaym is saying? She says such-and-such!” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, shall I kill those who are behind us from among the ṭulaqāʾ—the pardoned men—who fled and caused you to be routed, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: … and he mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission that meets Muslim’s criteria.
Muslim himself (5/196) and Aḥmad (3/190) also recorded it through other routes from Ḥammād, with the same chain.
Aḥmad (3/108–109) also narrated it through Ḥumayd, from Anas, in a similar wording.
He also narrated it (3/279) through Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Ṭalḥah, from Anas.
Its chain of transmission has only three links; however, Thābit stands between Ḥumayd and Anas, as they have mentioned. Allah knows best. *
3261—(“Indeed, Iblīs places his throne upon the water—and in one route: the sea—then dispatches his detachments. The one nearest to him in rank is the one who causes the greatest temptation. One of them comes and says, ‘I did such-and-such,’ and he replies, ‘You have done nothing.’ Then another comes and says:
‘“I did not leave him until I separated him from his wife.”
“So he draws him near and says, ‘How excellent you are!’”
Al-Aʿmash said: I think he said: “Then he embraces him.”)
It is reported from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) through several routes:
The first: al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sufyān, from him.
It was recorded by Muslim (8/138), Aḥmad (3/314), and ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd in al-Muntakhab (3/20/1031), through Abū Muʿāwiyah, who said: al-Aʿmash narrated it to us with this chain.
