Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated it (2909) through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ, who said: Al-Layth narrated to me; ʿUqayl narrated to me, from Ibn Shihāb, through the same chain. Al-Haythamī said (8/5):
“Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it through two chains of transmission, and the narrators of one of them are the narrators of the authentic collections.”
He seems to mean the first one. In my view, the second is likewise, were it not for the fact that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ had some weakness due to his retention; nevertheless, he is one whose reports may be used as corroboration, so the hadith gains further strength upon strength through him.
Know that the hadiths concerning Ibn Ṣayyād, the Prophet’s asking him about “the smoke,” and his inability to answer are numerous. Some of them are found in the authentic collections and the Sunan. See Mishkāt (5494) and Ṣaḥīḥ Sunan Abī Dāwūd (al-Malāḥim). This report is not found in them; rather, I have included it here for two reasons. First, it contains an addition not found in those reports: his asking his Companions what Ibn Ṣayyād had said, and his replying to them: “You differed …”
The other reason is that I wished to remind those heedless people who attribute to the religion what does not belong to it. Thus, they say that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The disagreement of my ummah is a mercy,” or: “The disagreement of my Companions is a mercy for you,” and other such reports whose fabrication I have explained in their proper places. Consequently, they approve of the intense disagreements among the legal schools and make them part of religion, contrary to the Quran and the sunnah, as the scholars—may Allah Most High have mercy on them—have explained. Some of them go so far as to claim that every one of those contradictory opinions has evidence in the sunnah. Thus, regarding bleeding, for example, they imagine that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was once asked about it and answered that it nullifies minor ablution, and that on another occasion he was asked about it and answered that it does not nullify it! And there are similar fantasies that have no basis in the sunnah. On this occasion, they recite the words of their al-Būṣīrī in praise of the Prophet:
“And all of them seek from the Messenger of Allah …”
