Note: What prompted me to provide this source documentation was that I saw Shaykh al-Aʿẓamī, in his commentary on al-Muṣannaf, do no more in documenting this hadith than attribute it to al-Ṭabarānī. On the other hand, I saw our companion ʿAbd al-Majīd al-Salafī, in his commentary on al-Ṭabarānī, declare the hadith defective because of the aforementioned Shāhīn. Since this might give readers the impression that it is weak, I considered it necessary to clarify its authenticity through the two aforementioned corroborating reports from the hadiths of ʿAlī and Jābir. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is the Granter of success. *
- “You differed while I was in your midst, and after me you will differ even more intensely.”
It was narrated by ʿAbd al-Razzāq in al-Muṣannaf (11/389/20818), and through him by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/146), from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Sinān ibn Abī Sinān, who heard al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī relate:
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, concealed “smoke” for Ibn Ṣayyād and asked him what he had concealed for him. He replied, “Dukh.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Be gone! You will never exceed your station.”
When he turned away, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “What did he say?”
Some of them said: “Dukh.” Others said: “Rather, he said: ‘Zakh.’” (1)
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said: … and he mentioned it.
I say: This chain of transmission is authentic.
