where he assumes that no one will pass in front of him. We hear this from many people when we instruct them to pray facing a barrier: they find it strange and immediately say, “Brother, there is no one here!” We then remind them of this account and of Allah’s saying concerning Iblis:
“Indeed, he and his tribe see you from where you do not see them.” [al-Aʿraf: 27]
“And indeed, in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or listens while fully attentive.” [Qaf: 37]
3252—“Whatever belongs to me and the Banu ʿAbd al-Muttalib is yours.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir (5/269/5303), al-Saghir (1/236–237), and al-Awsat (4630): ʿUbayd Allah ibn Rumahis al-Jushami narrated to us: Abu ʿAmr Ziyad ibn Tariq—who had reached the age of 120—narrated to us, saying: I heard Abu Jarwal Zuhayr ibn Surad al-Jushami say:
When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, took us captive on the day of Hunayn—the day of Hawazin—and began distributing the young men and the captives, I recited to him these verses:
“Bestow your grace upon us, O Messenger of Allah, in generosity; for you are the man in whom we place our hopes and whom we await.
Bestow your favor upon a people whom divine decree has afflicted, their unity scattered by the changing course of time.
Time has left among us those who cry out in grief, with anguish and sorrow pressing upon their hearts.
If your spreading bounty does not come to their aid—O most forbearing of people when put to the test—
Bestow your favor upon women who once nursed you; for all that you do and refrain from doing adorns you.
Do not reduce us to those stripped of all they possess; spare us, for we are a noble people.
We are surely grateful for kindness when others deny it, and after this day we have much in reserve.”
