There is another discrepancy attributable to this Yūnus, or to someone below him in the chain—though he is more likely to be responsible for it. Al-Bazzār said in his Musnad (2/357/1847):
“ʿAlī ibn al-Mundhir narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us: Yūnus ibn ʿAmr—who is Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq—narrated to us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jābir, from the nephew of Saʿd ibn Mālik, from Saʿd, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording mentioned above.”
Al-Bazzār said:
“We know of no report from Saʿd except through this chain of transmission, and we know of no one who narrated from ʿAbd Allāh other than Yūnus ibn ʿAmr.”
I say: That is indeed what he stated. It appears to me that he is the one mentioned in Ibn Ḥibbān’s al-Thiqāt (The Reliable Narrators) (5/18):
“ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī al-Madanī, brother of Muḥammad and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the two sons of Jābir. Saʿīd al-Maqburī narrated from him.”
The same appears in al-Bukhārī’s History and in Ibn Abī Ḥātim’s book, though neither of them mentioned any criticism or accreditation concerning him.
However, his inclusion in this chain appears to be another error by Yūnus al-Sabīʿī. Likewise, his making the hadith part of the reports of Saʿd ibn Mālik—namely, Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ—is erroneous. Rather, it belongs to the reports of his brother, Nāfiʿ ibn ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, as established by the preceding chains and by Simāk’s corroborating report, which al-Ḥāfiẓ attributed in al-Iṣābah to Ibn ʿAsākir. This is what al-Baghawī and Ibn al-Sakan deemed correct, as al-Ḥāfiẓ related in the biographical entry for this Hāshim.
Note: Our esteemed brother Abū Isḥāq al-Ḥuwaynī, in his annotation to Musnad Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ (240/159), attributed the hadith of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jābir to Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Āḥād. This is an error, for he has only the hadith of ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, as mentioned above.
Likewise, his describing ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jābir as “unknown”—perhaps relying in this on the statement:
