of Ibn Abī Shaybah; and al-Ḥākim (3/430–431), through several chains from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Jābir ibn Samurah, from Nāfiʿ ibn ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ—may Allah be pleased with him—from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

It also has, in Musnad Aḥmad (4/337–338), two other chains from Ibn ʿUmayr. One of them is through al-Masʿūdī, from ʿAbd al-Malik, with the same chain; Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim also narrated it (643). However, it gives “ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmayr” in place of “ʿAbd al-Malik,” perhaps due to a typographical error. Despite this, its learned annotator said:

“Its chain is authentic, and its narrators are among the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections!”

He overlooked the fact that this al-Masʿūdī had suffered deterioration in his memory, and that the two Shaykhs did not narrate from him except that al-Bukhārī cited him in suspended form. Thus, the hadith is authentic through the other chains.

Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq differed from them, reporting: from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Jābir ibn Samurah, from Hāshim ibn ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, as a prophetic report, with the wording:

“The Muslims will prevail over the Arabian Peninsula ...”

The hadith then continues with similar wording. Al-Ḥākim also narrated it (3/395), substituting “Hāshim ibn ʿUtbah” for “Nāfiʿ ibn ʿUtbah.” I believe this to be one of the errors of this Yūnus, for although Muslim included him among his narrators, al-Ḥāfiẓ said of him:

“Truthful; he makes occasional errors.”

Further confirmation that the hadith belongs to the reports of Nāfiʿ, rather than those of Hāshim, is that Simāk ibn Ḥarb correctly corroborated Ibn ʿUmayr. Shuʿbah narrated from him, from Jābir ibn Samurah, with the same chain.

Ibn Ḥibbān narrated it (8/285/6770—al-Iḥsān).
