“Among its narrators are some whom I do not know.”
It is authentically established that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Whoever wishes for his provision to be expanded and his lifespan to be prolonged, let him maintain his ties of kinship.”
Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim from Anas. Al-Bukhari also narrated it from Abu Hurayrah, and al-Hakim (4/160) from Ali and Ibn Abbas.
The hadith has a third corroborating report with similar wording:
“Know your lineages, so that you may maintain your ties of kinship. For a kinship bond is not close when it is severed, however near the relation may be; nor is it distant when it is maintained, however remote the relation may be.”
277 — “Know your lineages, so that you may maintain your ties of kinship. For a kinship bond is not close when it is severed, however near the relation may be; nor is it distant when it is maintained, however remote the relation may be.”
Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi narrated it in his Musnad (2757): Ishaq ibn Sa‘id narrated to us; he said: My father told me:
“I was with Ibn Abbas when a man came to him, and he asked him, ‘Who are you?’ The man then claimed a distant kinship tie with him, so Ibn Abbas spoke to him gently and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said ...’” Then he mentioned it.
Al-Hakim (4/161) and al-Sam‘ani in al-Ansab (1/7) also narrated it through al-Tayalisi’s chain.
Al-Hakim said: “Authentic according to the criterion of the two Shaykhs.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him.
I say: It is only according to Muslim’s criterion, for al-Bukhari did not rely upon al-Tayalisi, but narrated from him only in suspended form.
Al-Bukhari also narrated the hadith in al-Adab al-Mufrad (no. 73): Ahmad ibn Ya‘qub narrated to us; he said: Ishaq ibn Sa‘id ibn Amr informed us of it, as a report attributed to Ibn Abbas, without the incident.
