as well as Ibn Abi Shaybah (14/419) and Ahmad (3/187 and 205)—all of them from Humayd, in both abridged and fuller versions. This is Ahmad’s wording: I heard Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, say:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out to the Trench and found the Emigrants and the Ansar digging on a cold morning. They had no servants to do that work for them, so when he saw the fatigue and hunger they were enduring, he said:
‘O Allah, truly life is the life of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansar and the Emigrants.’
They responded to him:
‘We are those who pledged allegiance to Muhammad
To wage jihad for as long as we live.’”
The wording is that of al-Bukhari.
This documentation makes clear the error in Zakariyya ibn Yahya’s narration of the hadith: he contradicted the reliable narrators from Thabit, and likewise those from Humayd, by attributing to Anas the hadith narrated by al-Bara’. Anas’s hadith in the two Sahihs has another wording that differs from it, as you can see.
It is clear that there is no contradiction between the hadith of al-Bara’ on the one hand and that of Anas ibn Malik on the other, despite their difference in wording. It may be said that they would sometimes recite this and sometimes that. This is evident and unmistakable. And Allah Most High knows best.
Moreover, the documentation of the hadith through Qatadah and others from Anas, in abridged form, has already preceded under no. 3199. *
