and Abu Ya‘la (3/1716), through several chains, including Sufyan and Shu‘bah, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib, concerning this report. Some of them contain additions not found in others, as we indicated by placing the additions in square brackets and citing, in the footnotes, those who transmitted them.
The hadith also has a supporting narration from Anas, transmitted by Zakariyya ibn Yahya, who said: “I heard Thabit al-Bunani narrating from him that he would say on the day of the Trench:
‘By Allah, had it not been for Allah, we would not have been guided,
nor given charity, nor prayed.
So send down tranquility upon us.’”
Al-Bazzar recorded it (2/332/1804) in this form, without the words: “And make firm our feet should we meet [the enemy]!”
I do not know whether this was omitted by a copyist or by one of its narrators. Its chain contains weakness, contrary to al-Haythami’s statement following it (6/133):
“Al-Bazzar and Abu Ya‘la narrated it, and its narrators are trustworthy.”
I say: Zakariyya ibn Yahya—who was Abu Yahya al-Dhari‘—was not explicitly declared reliable by anyone other than Ibn Hibban, who included him in his book al-Thiqat (The Reliable Narrators) (6/334). Even so, Ibn Hibban criticized him for poor retention, saying:
“He makes errors.”
Al-Hafiz endorsed this assessment, saying in al-Taqrib:
“Truthful, but makes errors.”
