In connection with his aforementioned statement regarding his Companionship, I was struck by his frankness in al-Siyar (2/107), where he said:
“He had only the slightest share of Companionship!”
Note: As for the report narrated by al-Hakim (3/476) through Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Umar ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, from his father, from his grandfather, who said:
Muawiyah sent Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq—may Allah be pleased with him—100,000 dirhams after he had refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid ibn Muawiyah. Abd al-Rahman returned it and refused to accept it, saying, “Should I sell my religion for my worldly life?!” He then left for Mecca, where he died.
Al-Hakim and al-Dhahabi left it without comment, apparently because of its evident weakness. Regarding this Ibrahim, Ibn Adi said: “Most of his hadith are denounced.” *
- “Gabriel is with one of you, Michael is with the other, and Israfil is a mighty angel who witnesses the fighting—or, he said, who witnesses the battle line.” He said this to Ali and Abu Bakr—may Allah be pleased with them.
It was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Musannaf (12/16/12002), Ahmad (1/147), Ibn Sad in al-Tabaqat (3/175–176), al-Bazzar (2/314/1765), Abu Yala (1/283–283), Ibn Abi Asim in al-Sunnah (2/574–575), and al-Hakim (3/68), through Misar, from Abu Awn al-Thaqafi, from Abu Salih al-Hanafi, from Ali, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Abu Bakr and me on the day of Badr: … and he mentioned it.
Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him, and al-Hafiz accepted it in al-Fath (7/313).
Al-Bazzar said:
“We know of no narration of this from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, except through this chain of transmission.” *
