“Its chain of transmission is authentic.” He made no comment on it in al-Siyar (2/108), nor did he attribute it to anyone.
Ahmad also recorded it (5/5): “Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ibn Uyaynah informed us, from Ismail ibn Abi Khalid, from al-Shabi.”
This is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim, as you can see.
The other corroborating report is narrated by Abd al-Rahman ibn Man—who is Ibn Mighra: Ismail ibn Abi Khalid informed us, from Abd Allah al-Bahi, a client of al-Zubayr, who said:
“I was in the mosque while Marwan was delivering a sermon, when Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr said, ‘By Allah! Abu Bakr did not appoint any member of his family as successor.’ Marwan said, ‘You are the one concerning whom it was revealed: “And the one who said to his parents, ‘Fie upon you both!’”’ Abd al-Rahman replied, ‘You have lied. Rather, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed your father.’”
Al-Bazzar said: “We know of no report from Abd al-Rahman except through this route.”
I say: Its chain of transmission is good, as al-Haythami stated, and al-Hafiz affirmed this in Mukhtasar al-Zawaid (1/686).
I have found a strong corroborating transmitter for Ibn Mighra, namely Yahya ibn Zakariyya ibn Abi Zaida. He narrated it in a more complete and clearer form. Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it from him—as cited in the Exegesis of Ibn Kathir (4/159)—from Abd Allah al-Bahi, who said:
“I was in the mosque when Marwan delivered a sermon and said, ‘Allah Most High has shown the Commander of the Faithful a sound judgment regarding Yazid: that he should appoint him as successor, for Abu Bakr appointed Umar.’ Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, ‘A Heraclean dynasty?! Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, did not place it in any of his offspring or any member of his household. Muawiyah did so only as a favor and an honor for his son!’ Marwan said, ‘Are you not the one who said to his parents, “Fie upon you both!”?’ Abd al-Rahman replied:
