(13/462), through several routes. One of them is: Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Muqriʾ narrated to us: Ibn Lahiʿah narrated to me: Ibn Hubayrah narrated to me, from ʿAmr al-Bikali, from Abu al-Aʿwar, from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with this wording.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy. Al-Haythami did not recognize some of them, and so he said in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (5/239):
“Al-Tabarani and al-Bazzar narrated it, and it contains narrators whom I do not recognize.”
I say:
First: Abu al-Aʿwar al-Aslami. Muslim, Abu Ahmad al-Hakim, al-Baghawi, and others affirmed his Companionship, while some denied it. Its details are found in al-Isabah.
Perhaps what supports the view that he was a Companion is that the one who narrated from him was a Companion, namely:
Second: ʿAmr al-Bikali. Al-Bukhari said, “He had Companionship,” and Abu Hatim said likewise. Some denied this. See al-Isabah.
Third: Ibn Hubayrah—whose name was ʿAbd Allah al-Sabaʾi al-Hadrami al-Misri—was a trustworthy Successor whose reports were relied upon by Muslim.
Fourth: Ibn Lahiʿah—whose name was ʿAbd Allah—was trustworthy, though known for weakness in his retention, except in reports narrated from him by one of the ʿAbadilah, among whom was ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqriʾ, Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman, one of those who narrated this hadith from him. This is why I graded it authentic, and praise be to Allah. *
3238—“He has repented with a repentance which, if one who collected illicit taxes had repented likewise, would have been accepted from him.”
Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (148/1), from Abu Shaybah, from al-Hakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn ʿAbbas, attributed to the Prophet.
