- “I was commanded to migrate to a town…” Al-Khatib said:
“The meaning is: I was commanded to migrate to a town ‘that consumes other towns’—that is, whose inhabitants consume other towns. This is like Allah’s saying:
‘And Allah sets forth the parable of a town that was secure and at ease’—that is, a town whose people were at ease.
Here, mention of the town is a metonym for its inhabitants; what is intended is its people, not the town itself. The evidence for this is Allah’s saying: ‘So Allah made it taste the garment of hunger and fear because of what they used to do.’ A town does not act. And He says: ‘And it disbelieved in the favors of Allah’; a town does not disbelieve.
- ‘That consumes other towns’ means that it gains mastery over them, as in Allah’s saying: ‘Indeed, those who consume the wealth of orphans wrongfully.’ This does not mean literal eating, as distinct from withholding it from the orphans; it is not a matter of actual consumption. Likewise, Allah says: ‘And do not consume it extravagantly and hastily before they grow up’—meaning: do not seize it, spending it extravagantly on yourselves and hastening before they grow up and establish their claim against you regarding it, thereby taking it back from you for themselves. Thus, in the instances we have cited, ‘consuming’ means gaining mastery over something; and so it does in this hadith.”

He said, ‘Muhammad, with what do you threaten me?! By Allah, I have more…’
