And Faraj is weak.
The hadith has a fourth route from Abū Umāmah, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording:
“Fear Allah, your Lord ...”
The rest of the hadith is similar in wording to the heading. Its documentation has already been given under no. 867. *
3234—(The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, designated the area extending one barīd—a postal-stage distance—in every direction from Medina as protected land.)
It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (2036) and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (17/111/722), through Sulaymān ibn Kinānah, the client of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Sufyān informed us, from ʿAdī ibn Zayd, who said: ... and he mentioned it, adding:
“Its trees are not to be beaten for their leaves, nor are they to be cut down, except what is used to drive a camel.”
I say: This is an unknown chain of transmission, as has been explained elsewhere. I have cited it here only to establish its soundness through some corroborating reports that I have found; and I have not seen anyone do this before me. Thus I say:
First: Abū Bakr al-Faḍl narrated from Jābir, who said: ... and he mentioned something similar. It was narrated by al-Bazzār in his Musnad (2/54/1190), who said:
“It is narrated only through this route, and al-Faḍl ibn Mubashshir is ... acceptable in hadith.”
That is what he said! The hadith master criticized this, saying in Mukhtaṣar al-Zawāʾid (2/479): “I say: Rather, he is weak.”
And in al-Taqrīb, he said:
“There is some weakness in him.”
