Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in Musnad al-Shāmiyyīn (2/16/834) and al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (8/136/7535) through Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, who said: Shuraḥbīl ibn Muslim and Muḥammad ibn Ziyād related to me that they heard Abū Umāmah say: ... and he mentioned it.

I say: This is an authentic Syrian chain of transmission with a continuous chain.

He also narrated it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (8/162–163) through another chain from Ismāʿīl, in abridged form; but alongside Ibn ʿAyyāsh’s two shaykhs, he included Asad ibn Wadāʿah. Ibn Ḥibbān deemed him trustworthy (4/56), and al-Bukhārī, in al-Tārīkh (1/2/50), and al-Fasawī, in al-Maʿrifah (1/117), reported from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ that he was well regarded. Al-Fasawī also reported (2/385) what indicates that he was among those who devoted themselves to fiqh, remaining in the mosque rather than seeking worldly gain, and that he was the judge of the military district of Homs.

Al-Ṭabarānī then narrated (7617), through another authentic chain, from Ismāʿīl, from Shuraḥbīl, from Abū Umāmah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say in his sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage: ... and he mentioned it in a somewhat abridged form.

He also narrated in Musnad al-Shāmiyyīn (2/401–402), through Faraj ibn Faḍālah, from Luqmān ibn ʿĀmir, from Abū Umāmah, who said:

I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during the Farewell Pilgrimage. He addressed the people and said in his exhortation:

“Indeed, perhaps you will not see me after this year of yours”—three times.

Then a tall, dishevelled man, who seemed to be one of the men of Shanuʾah, stood up and said: “What, then, should we do, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied:

“Worship your Lord ...” He then mentioned the hadith, which includes: “willingly and wholeheartedly.”
