al-Ṭabarānī’s chain, it is possible that, in his aforementioned statement, al-Haythamī was referring to al-Ṭabarānī’s shaykh, Aḥmad ibn ʿAmr al-Khallāl, for I have not found any biographical notice for him. I say this while noting that al-Haythamī did not customarily declare a hadith defective on account of one of al-Ṭabarānī’s shaykhs except rarely—especially since this al-Khallāl narrated seventeen hadiths for him in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (17). It is also possible that the status of those above Yaʿqūb ibn Ḥumayd was unknown to both of them, especially ʿĪsā ibn al-Ḥaḍramī, who is mentioned only in the book of Ibn Abī Ḥātim. And Allah knows best. *
- “There is no prophet after me, and no community after you. So worship your Lord, establish your five daily prayers, give your zakah, fast your month, and obey those entrusted with authority over you; you will enter your Lord’s Paradise.”
Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (22/316/797) and Musnad al-Shāmiyyīn (2/193–194), as did Abū Nuʿaym in Maʿrifat al-Ṣaḥābah (2/283/1) and Ibn Mandah in al-Maʿrifah as well (2/175/1), through Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd, from Buḥayr ibn Saʿd, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from Abū Qutaylah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood before the people during the Farewell Pilgrimage and said: ... and he mentioned it.
I say: Its chain consists of trustworthy narrators, but Baqiyyah practised tadlīs and used an ambiguous transmission formula.
Yet it has a strong corroborating report in the hadith of Abū Umāmah, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: ‘O people! There is no prophet after me, and no community after you. Indeed, worship your Lord ...’” He then mentioned the hadith, adding after the phrase concerning zakah: “willingly and wholeheartedly.”
