“It was narrated by al-Bazzār, Aḥmad—in a lengthy hadith—and al-Ṭabarānī. Its chain includes al-Ḥārith ibn Ziyād; I have not found anyone who declared him trustworthy, and no one other than Yūnus ibn Sayf narrated from him. The rest of its narrators are trustworthy, although there is disagreement concerning some of them.”
- As for the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās, it is narrated by ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jumaḥī, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, as a Prophetic report with the same wording.
It was recorded by Abū Jaʿfar al-Razzāz in his hadith collection (4/99/1), Ibn ʿAdī (5/162), and Ibn ʿAsākir (16/683–684), who said:
“It is weak.”
I say: Its defect lies in this al-Jumaḥī, for there is disagreement concerning him. He is as al-Dhahabī said in al-Mīzān:
“Somewhat acceptable.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb:
“Not strong.”
I say: A narrator of his standing may likewise be cited as corroborative evidence. Perhaps that is why al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr made no comment on it in al-Bidāyah (8/121) and did not declare it weak.
- As for the hadith of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿUmayrah al-Muzanī, it is narrated by Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, from Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd, from him, with the same wording.
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh (4/1/327), Ibn ʿAsākir (16/684–686), and al-Dhahabī in al-Siyar (8/38).
