black garments—except during the three days. This was the view preferred by Imam Ibn Jarīr, may Allah have mercy on him. He said:
“It does not indicate that a woman is exempt from mourning. Rather, it only indicates that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed her to wear mourning attire for three days, and then to wear whichever garments she wished from among those that a woman observing her waiting period is permitted to wear, so long as they were neither adornment nor perfumed. For some garments are neither adornment nor mourning attire, such as the striped garments and Yemeni cloaks which he, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted a widow to wear. These are neither garments of adornment nor garments of mourning.”
I say: This is knowledge, understanding, and reconciliation between the hadiths, so hold fast to it with your molars. Allah alone grants success; there is no lord besides Him.
Note: Among the most astonishing and bizarre textual corruptions I have encountered in my scholarly life—having now entered my eighties—is that which has affected this hadith in the word tasallabī (“wear mourning attire”). In al-Mawārid (745), it appears as sallimī (“greet”); and this is likewise found in its source, Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān (3138, Dār al-Kutub, Beirut). In the Muʾassasah edition (3148), it appears as tasallamī (“receive”); and the same occurs in Ṭabaqāt Ibn Saʿd (8/282).
In Sharḥ al-Maʿānī and al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr, it appears as taskunī (“reside”); in Sunan al-Bayhaqī, as taslubīnī (“you despoil me”); and in al-Maʿrifah, as lā tasʾalīnī (“do not ask me”), without the letter bāʾ. Yet I think this is a typographical error, for its commentator noted that the only difference between al-Bayhaqī’s two books, al-Sunan and al-Āthār, is the addition of the negative particle lā. He said, “This is how it appears in the manuscript,” meaning that it reads: lā taslubīnī.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ, may Allah have mercy on him, drew attention in al-Fatḥ (9/448) to Ibn Ḥibbān’s error and stated categorically that the correct reading is the one I have established above. He then said:
