“The Messenger of Allah passed by ʿAbd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salūl while he was sitting in the shade of a thicket, and he said: ‘Ibn Abī Kabshah has covered us with dust!’ His son, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah, said: ‘By Him who has honoured you and sent down the Book to you, if you wish, I shall bring you his head.’ The Prophet said: ‘No; rather, be dutiful to your father and keep him good company.’”
Al-Bazzār said:
“We know of no one who narrated it from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr except ʿAmr ibn Khalīfah, and he is trustworthy.”
I say: Shabīb ibn Saʿīd also corroborated him, as you have seen. Ibn Ḥibbān declared both of them trustworthy, though both have been subject to criticism. Ibn Khuzaymah included the reports of the former in his Ṣaḥīḥ, as stated in al-Lisān, while al-Bukhārī narrated from the latter. Thus, each strengthens the other, and the chain of transmission is good, owing to the well-known difference of opinion concerning Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr. *
3224—“He did not die until Allah had permitted him to marry whichever women he wished.”
It was transmitted by al-Dārimī (2/154), al-Nasāʾī (2/68), and in al-Kubrā (6/434); Ibn Ḥibbān (2126, Mawārid); al-Ḥākim (2/437)—and through him, al-Bayhaqī (7/54); also by Aḥmad (6/180), as well as Ibn Jarīr in al-Tafsīr (22/24), and Ibn Saʿd in al-Ṭabaqāt (8/195), through various chains from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr al-Laythī, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: ... and he then cited it.
Ibn Jurayj explicitly stated that he had heard the report directly, as recorded in al-Mustadrak. Al-Ḥākim said: “Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said.
He likewise explicitly stated direct transmission in another narration recorded by Aḥmad, except that ʿAṭāʾ was uncertain about the intermediary between himself and ʿĀʾishah.
