It has also been narrated from Qatādah in mursal form, containing the words:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered a mountain pass called Shiʿb al-Ḥajūn.” He said: “The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, drew a line around ʿAbd Allāh ...” — the hadith.
Ibn Jarīr recorded it (26/20) with an authentic chain to him. *
3210—“The emergence of the signs, one after another: they will follow in succession like beads strung on a thread.”
It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ (1883), and by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ (1/258/4431), through Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Zahrānī, who said: My father narrated to us from Hishām ibn Ḥassān, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said ... and he cited it. Al-Ṭabarānī said: “No one narrated it from Hishām except Dāwūd al-ʿAtakī; Abū al-Rabīʿ alone narrated it from him.”
I say: He is trustworthy. His name was Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd al-ʿAtakī al-Zahrānī. Both Shaykhs relied upon him, and al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb: “Trustworthy; no one has criticized him on valid grounds.”
I say: His father, Dāwūd al-ʿAtakī, is unknown except through his son’s narration from him. To my knowledge, no one gave him a biographical notice apart from Ibn Ḥibbān, who mentioned him in al-Thiqāt (8/234) solely on the basis of this narration! Yet al-Haythamī deemed him trustworthy, saying in al-Majmaʿ (7/321):
“Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ, and its narrators are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections, apart from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and Dāwūd al-Zahrānī; both are trustworthy!”
Even stranger than this is al-Dāraquṭnī’s declaring the hadith defective on account of his son Abū al-Rabīʿ—as reported from him by Ibn
