I say: Jabir al-Juʿfi is not relied upon as evidence, despite his learning and despite Shuʿbah, al-Thawri, and others having declared him trustworthy. For he was a weak Rāfiḍī (an extremist Shiʿi); yet he may be cited in corroboration for a hadith such as this, thereby rendering it good. And Allah knows best.
3208—“O assembly of Quraysh! There is no one worshipped besides Allah in whom there is any good”—Quraysh knew that the Christians worship Jesus, son of Mary, “and what do you say concerning Muhammad?” They said, “O Muhammad, do you not claim that Jesus was a prophet and a righteous servant among Allah’s servants? If you are truthful, then their gods are as they say”—the original wording reads: “as you say.” He said: Allah then revealed:
“When the son of Mary is cited as an example, your people raise a clamor over it.”
Quran 43:57
He said: I asked, “What does ‘raise a clamor’ mean?” He replied, “They cry out noisily.”
“And indeed, he will be a sign of the Hour.”
Quran 43:61
He said: “It refers to the coming forth—in another narration, the descent—of Jesus, son of Mary, peace be upon him, before the Day of Resurrection.”
Ahmad narrated it (1/317–318): Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us; Shayban narrated to us from Asim, from Abu Razin, from Abu Yahya, the freedman of Ibn Aqil al-Ansari, who said: Ibn Abbas said:
“I know of a verse in the Quran about which no one has ever asked me. I do not know whether people know it and have not asked about it, or whether they have failed to notice it and therefore did not ask about it.” He then began relating to us. When he rose to leave, we reproached one another for not having asked him about it. I said, “I shall ask him about it tomorrow.” When the following day came, I said, “O Ibn Abbas! Yesterday you mentioned that there was a verse in the Quran about which no one had ever asked you, and that you did not know whether people knew it and had not asked about it, or whether they had failed to notice it. Tell me about it, and about the verses you recited before it.” He replied, “Yes. The Messenger of Allah said to Quraysh: ...” Then he cited it.
Al-Tabarani also narrated it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (12/154/12470) through another chain
