does not narrate anything from Ibn ʿAdi, for there were thirty-eight years between their deaths: the former died in 327 AH, and the latter in 365 AH.
- “Do not dislike daughters, for they are affectionate companions and precious.”
Ahmad (4/151) transmitted it, and Ibn al-Jawzi transmitted it through his route in al-ʿIlal; as did Tamam (11/197/2) and al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (17/310/856), from Ibn Lahiʿah, from Abu ʿUshanah, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿAmir, as a report attributed to the Prophet.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission, due to Ibn Lahiʿah’s poor retention; Ibn al-Jawzi likewise identified this as its defect.
It has also been related by another route, both in mursal and connected forms:
As for the mursal version, ʿAli ibn Harb al-Taʾi transmitted it in his Hadith collection (folio 81/1): Abu Muʿawiyah narrated to us from Hisham ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, attributing it to the Prophet with the same wording, except that he said, “those deemed insignificant,” in place of, “precious.”
As for the connected version, Ibn ʿAdi transmitted it (6/278), and Ibn al-Jawzi transmitted it through him, from Muhammad ibn Muʿawiyah, who said: Abu Muʿawiyah al-Ḍarir narrated to us from Hisham ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from Aishah, as a report attributed to the Prophet.
Muhammad ibn Muʿawiyah—al-Naysaburi—was an abandoned narrator, accused of fabrication.
About twenty years after writing this, it became clear to me that Qutaybah ibn Saʿid’s narration from Ibn Lahiʿah is on a par, in terms of authenticity, with the narrations of the ʿAbādilah from him, as al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi demonstrated in al-Siyar. I have quoted this from him in more than one place in my hadith source-analyses and annotations (1). And since this hadith
