Then, when the month of Rabi al-Awwal came, he visited her. Seeing his shadow, she said: “That is certainly the shadow of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him—but the Prophet does not visit me. So who is this?!” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then entered. When she saw him, she said: “Messenger of Allah, I did not know what to do when you came in to me!”
She said: She had a slave-girl whom she had kept hidden from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, so she said: “So-and-so is yours.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then went to Zaynab’s bed, which had been raised up, and lowered it with his hand. He then had relations with his wife and was pleased with them.
Ahmad then said after this hadith—in the Musnad of Aishah (6/131–132):
Affan related to us: Hammad—that is, Ibn Salamah—related to us, saying: Thabit related to us from Shumaysah, from Aishah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was on a journey when one of Safiyyah’s camels fell ill. Zaynab had camels to spare, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to her:
“Safiyyah has a camel that has fallen ill. Would you give her one of your camels?”
She replied: “Am I to give one to that Jewess?!”
He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then kept away from her during Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram—two or three months—not visiting her. She said: “Until I despaired of him and moved my bed.”
She said: “Then one day, around midday, I suddenly saw the shadow of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, approaching.”
Affan said: Hammad initially related it to me from Shumaysah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Then later I heard him relate it from Shumaysah, from Aishah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He later said: “During a Hajj or an Umrah,” though I think he said: “During the Farewell Pilgrimage.”
Al-Tabarani also transmitted it in al-Muʿjam al-Awsat (1/145/2/2770), in its entirety, with similar wording,
