Sulayman, from Thabit, who said: Shumaysah—or Sumayyah—related to me; Abd al-Razzaq said: In my copy it is Sumaynah; from Safiyyah bint Huyayy:
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Hajj with his wives. At one point along the way, a man came down and began driving them on rapidly. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “…”—and then cited it.
As they were travelling, Safiyyah bint Huyayy’s camel knelt down. She was among those best supplied with mounts, so she wept. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was informed of this, he came and began wiping her tears with his hand. Yet she only wept more, while he was telling her to stop. When she persisted, he sharply rebuked and scolded her. He then ordered the people to halt, although he had not intended to stop, so they dismounted.
She said: It was my allotted day. When they halted, the Prophet’s tent was pitched and he entered it. I did not know how I should approach the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I feared that he was displeased with me. So I went to Aishah and said to her: “You know that I would never trade away my day with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for anything. I have given you my day, on condition that you win the Messenger of Allah’s pleasure with me.” She said: “Yes.”
She said: Aishah then took a head covering which she had dyed with saffron, sprinkled it with water to release its fragrance, dressed herself, and went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. She lifted the edge of the tent, and he said to her: “What is the matter with you, Aishah? This is not your day.” She replied: “That is Allah’s grace; He grants it to whom He wills.” Then he conversed with his wife.
When it was time to set out in the afternoon, he said to Zaynab bint Jahsh: “Zaynab, lend your sister Safiyyah a camel.” Zaynab had more mounts than any of them, but she said: “Am I to lend a camel to your Jewess?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, became angry when he heard this from her. He kept away from her and did not speak to her until he reached Mecca, throughout the days of Mina on that journey, and until he returned to Madinah. During Muharram and Safar, he did not visit her or allot her a turn, and she despaired of him.
