is not good because of the break in its chain. Moreover, Abu Ishaq—al-Sabiʿi—practised tadlīs and became confused in his later years. Unless he meant that it is good on account of its supporting reports, in which case it is as he said; but he did not make this clear.

It is strengthened by another route recorded by al-Tirmidhi (2/184/593), through Abu Bakr ibn Ayyash, from Asim, from Zirr ibn Hubaysh, from Abd Allah, who said:

“I was praying, while the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, Abu Bakr, and Umar were with him. When I sat down, I began by praising Allah, then invoking blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and then supplicated for myself. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

‘Ask, and you will be granted; ask, and you will be granted.’”

Al-Tirmidhi said:

“It is a good, authentic hadith.”

I say: Its chain of transmission is good. Ahmad also transmitted it (1/445), through another route from Zaʾidah: “Asim ibn Abi al-Najud related to us,” with its final passage, in a different account. Shuʿbah likewise narrated it from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Ubaydah, from Abd Allah. Ahmad transmitted it (1/386 and 437). See Takhrij al-Mukhtarah (455) and al-Mishkah (931).

It has another supporting report with similar wording, cited previously under no. 2035. *
