I say: This is a chain of transmission whose narrators are trustworthy and among al-Bukhari’s narrators, so it is authentic were it not for the intermediary between al-Awza'i and Nafi', who was not named, although al-Awza'i’s transmission from Nafi' is established in Sahih al-Bukhari.
In any case, it is a valid corroborating report, and through it the hadith rises to the rank of authenticity, Allah Most High willing.
There are several necessary observations here:
First: I had mentioned this hadith in al-Da'ifah, no. 3697, through the first route. But when I came upon the other route and the corroborating report, I could not leave it there; so I transferred it here, asking the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, for further success and guidance.
Second: Accordingly, I also transferred it from Da'if al-Jami, no. 3258, to Sahih al-Jami. I therefore ask those who possess both works to make this change.
Third: The hadith appears in al-Fath al-Kabir, which is the basis of my books Sahih al-Jami and Da'if al-Jami, without being marked with the letter Z, which the author of al-Fath used to indicate that a report was from the Supplement to al-Jami al-Saghir. Consequently, it appeared in Da'if al-Jami wa Ziyadatuhu without the special number that I had adopted in place of the letter Z. It has now become clear to me that it is not in al-Jami al-Saghir, but rather in its Supplement; hence this clarification is necessary.
Fourth: Al-Mundhiri indicated that the hadith is strengthened by the combined force of the two routes from Ibn Amr by introducing it with the word “from.” At the same time, however, he indicated that al-Hakim was mistaken in declaring its chain authentic, saying (3/62):
