Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Reliable Narrators and said:
“He sometimes contradicted others.”
This is what he mentioned in al-Ta‘jil. He overlooked Ibn Abi Hatim’s report from his father:
“Truthful.”
And al-Khatib’s report from Ibn Ma‘in:
“There was nothing objectionable about him.”
I say: The man is trustworthy, so his corroboration is strong.
In Fath al-Bari (10/475), al-Hafiz attributed the hadith to al-Bukhari and, by remaining silent about it, indicated that he regarded it as strengthened.
It has also been narrated through another chain from Abu Hurayrah: Kathir ibn Zayd narrated it from al-Walid ibn Rabah, from Abu Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, in the wording given in the heading.
Ibn ‘Adi transmitted it (6/68) in the biographical entry of this Kathir—who was al-Aslami—and said:
“I have found nothing objectionable in his hadith, and I hope that there is no harm in him.”
In al-Taqrib, al-Hafiz said:
“Truthful, but makes mistakes.”
Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated (8/558), with an authentic chain from ‘Ikrimah, who said:
“Surely, a two-faced person is unlikely to be trustworthy in the sight of Allah.”
Note: Shaykh al-Jilani was mistaken in his commentary on al-Adab al-Mufrad when he said concerning the hadith under discussion:
