in Mawarid al-Zam'an (462/1871), as follows: “Abu Uthman al-Hindi.” This differs from what is found first of all in al-Ihsan, as noted above, for no lineage designation is given there. Secondly, it differs from what appears in al-Jarh and elsewhere in the biographical entry for Khalid al-Ziyadi: namely, that he narrated from Abu Uthman al-Asbahi. Hence the need for this clarification.
This hadith is among those mistreated by the so-called Hassan ibn Abd al-Mannan, who declared it weak in a hadith of Abu Dharr containing several passages, one of which is this. He was either unaware, or feigned unawareness, of its corroborating reports, including the hadith of Anas reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim. I refuted him in detail in Advice: Warning Muslims against Ibn Abd al-Mannan’s Declaring Authentic Hadiths Weak and His Ruining the Imams’ Authoritative Books through His Annotations (no. 123). *
3195 — “It is as though I can see the whiteness of the Messenger of Allah’s flank while he was prostrating.”
Ahmad (3/15) transmitted it through two routes from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Ubayd Allah ibn al-Mughirah, who said: I heard Abu al-Haytham say: I heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri say: ... and he mentioned it.
I say: The narrators in this chain are trustworthy, but Ibn Lahi'ah is weak on account of his retention. Al-Haythami therefore deemed it defective, saying (2/125):
“Ahmad reported it, and it includes Ibn Lahi'ah, concerning whom there is criticism.”
I say: This is certainly among his sound narrations, given its numerous corroborating reports from a group of Companions, including al-Bara' ibn Azib, Abd Allah ibn Malik ibn Buhaynah, Abu Hurayrah, Abd Allah ibn Aqram, and Maymunah, as well as others who reported the same meaning. Al-Nasa'i transmitted them with chains from the aforementioned Companions in al-Sunan al-Kubra (1/233 and 234), and some of them are in Sahih Muslim (2/53–54). Many of them are referenced in Sahih Abi Dawud (835 and 837). The hadith of Ibn Buhaynah is also recorded by al-Bukhari (807), as well as Ibn Hibban (3/93/1916). See al-Talkhis al-Habir (1/255).
