Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb:
“Abandoned; Abū Zurʿah accused him.”
The error may, however, be in the original source—that is, in Musnad al-Ḥārith—or in al-Haythamī’s Zawāʾid, from which I have quoted. The former is more likely, given that al-Ḥāfiẓ cited it in al-Maṭālib, as mentioned above, with the wording “from his father,” thereby indicating that it is an error. Two matters, however, cast doubt upon this:
First, al-Ḥāfiẓ did not follow it with “Jarīr,” as occurs in the Zawāʾid, as mentioned above.
Second, Abū ʿAwānah narrated it through several routes from Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd. Among them is his statement: “Al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Usāmah narrated to us …” He then gave its chain of transmission as far as Yūnus, omitting the remainder; but he said: “The hadith of al-Firyābī from al-Thawrī.”
I say: Al-Thawrī’s hadith is like that of the other narrators from Yūnus: it contains no mention of the father. Thus, I do not know whether this is likewise how it appears in al-Ḥārith’s narration as transmitted by Abū ʿAwānah from him, or whether he overlooked that error because of its obviousness.
Further supporting the conclusion that it is an error is the fact that Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr related it correctly through ʿAbd al-Wārith—the shaykh of al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Faḍl. And Allah knows best.
Moreover, Jarīr’s hadith attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him—apart from the words “reward and spoils”—is found in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and elsewhere, narrated from a number of other Companions, including ʿUrwah al-Bāriqī, Ibn ʿUmar, and others. *
