Faḍl al-Khayl (The Virtue of Horses) (p. 37), through ʿAbbād—namely, Ibn al-ʿAwwām—both of whom narrated from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Muslim ibn Yasār: that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ... [the rest of] the hadith.
I say: The unnamed man in Musaddad’s report is this Muslim ibn Yasār. He appears to be the Basran, Umayyad, Meccan jurist; he was a trustworthy Successor, so the report is mursal.
It was also narrated mursal through another route. Al-Ṭayālisī said in his Musnad (1059): Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim narrated to us: al-Zubayr ibn al-Khirrīt al-Azdī narrated to me: Nuʿaym ibn Abī Hind al-Ashjaʿī narrated to me:
“The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was seen wiping the cheek of a horse. He was asked about this, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Gabriel reproached me concerning the horse.’”
Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (24/101) and Abū Dāwūd, in al-Marāsīl (228/291), transmitted it through al-Ṭayālisī, by way of Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl: Jarīr narrated to us with the same chain.
I say: This is an authentic mursal chain, but it is among the mursal reports of the Kufans, since this Nuʿaym was a Kufan. It may therefore lend strength to the preceding report, owing to the difference between their respective regions and teachers—especially since it has also been narrated with a continuous chain to the Prophet. Abū Bishr Yūnus ibn Ḥabīb—the transmitter of al-Ṭayālisī’s Musnad—said after the hadith: “Aḥmad ibn al-Furāt informed us, from Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm, from Saʿīd ibn Zayd, from al-Zubayr ibn Khirrīt, from Nuʿaym ibn Abī Hind, from ʿUrwah”—that is, ʿUrwah al-Bāriqī. This is how he transmitted it in his recension of the Musnad. Thus, al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar erred when he attributed it to al-Ṭayālisī in al-Maṭālib. In his entry on Saʿīd ibn Zayd in al-Taqrīb, he said:
“Truthful, but prone to errors.”
