on the part of its annotator, Muḥammad Fuʾād ʿAbd al-Bāqī (may Allah have mercy on him). For its wording reads: “... from ʿUtayy ibn Ḍamrah, who said: ‘I saw, with Ubayy, a man proclaiming tribal affiliation ...’” The aforementioned annotator assumed that Abī had an initial hamzah with fatḥah, with the possessive yāʾ added to the word for “father”—that is, the father of the speaker, ʿUtayy ibn Ḍamrah. On this basis, he understood Ḍamrah, the latter’s father, to be the Companion in the hadith, and commented: “I find no mention of this Companion.”
Rather, it is Ubayy, with an initial hamzah pronounced with ḍammah: Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, the well-known Companion.
The Rightly Guided Caliph ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) acted upon this hadith, saying: “Whoever boasts of tribal affiliations, tell him to bite—or suck—his father’s penis.”
Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated it, as cited in al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr (3/235/2).
- “A group from my Ummah will continue to prevail upon the truth until the Hour is established.”
