8—As for the hadith of Jarir, it is narrated by al-Faraj ibn al-Yaman: Umar ibn Yazid narrated to us from Ziyad ibn ʿAlaqah, from him.
It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in Shuʿab al-Iman (4/170/4700), who said: “This chain of transmission is weak.”
I say: I do not know al-Faraj ibn al-Yaman or Umar ibn Yazid.
In sum, the hadith is authentic when all these routes are considered together, especially since some of them are good in themselves, as stated previously. And Allah knows best.
3171—“Do you wish to be one who puts people to trial, O Muʿadh?! When you lead the people in prayer, recite: ‘By the sun and its morning brightness,’ ‘Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,’ ‘By the night as it envelops,’ and ‘Recite in the name of your Lord.’”
This is from the hadith of Jabir ibn Abdullah, and it was narrated from him by a number of people in varying wordings—some lengthy and some abridged. This is the wording of Abu al-Zubayr, as transmitted from him by al-Layth ibn Saʿd.
It was recorded by Muslim (2/42), al-Nasaʾi (1/155), Ibn Majah (1/315/986), Abu ʿAwanah (2/173), and al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan (3/116), through various routes from al-Layth, from Abu al-Zubayr, from him, who said:
Muʿadh ibn Jabal led his companions in the night prayer and made it lengthy for them. One of us then left, [and prayed]. Muʿadh was informed about him and said, “He is a hypocrite.” When this reached the man, he went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and informed him of what Muʿadh had said. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said to him: … and he mentioned it.
