I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from Sulaymān ibn al-Muʿāfā. Al-Dhahabī said:
“Ibn ʿAdī said: ‘He did not hear anything from his father, yet they criticized him for narrating from him.’”
I say: Accordingly, his narration from his father would be by wijādah—that is, based on written material found from him.
I further say: Neither he nor al-Ḥāfiẓ mentioned anything other than this in al-Lisān. It appears to me that he was one of al-Ṭabarānī’s shaykhs from whom he narrated only a few reports, for in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ he narrated from him only three hadiths (3790–3792), and in al-Ṣaghīr (420—al-Rawḍ) he narrated a fourth; this is the fifth.
Ninth: Abū al-Aḥwaṣ narrated it from Manṣūr with wording similar to it, including the phrase, “In the name of Allah.”
Al-Khaṭīb recorded it in al-Tārīkh (11/141).
Perhaps, after this brief source documentation and critical examination, it would be useful to summarize its benefits as follows:
First: The hadith is authentic from Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her. The claimed defect of a break in its chain does not undermine its authenticity, particularly since al-Tirmidhī, al-Ḥākim, and al-Dhahabī authenticated it, while al-Ḥāfiẓ graded it good. I then found that al-Nawawī also authenticated it in al-Adhkār.
Second: The addition, “In the name of Allah; I place my trust in Allah,” is established in it, even though Sufyān al-Thawrī alone narrated it, for he was a towering authority in memorization. It is also supported by the previously mentioned hadith of Anas, and more than one narrator, as noted above, corroborated Sufyān in reporting the phrase, “In the name of Allah.”
Third: Most narrators report its verbs in the singular, while some added, “or that I be caused to stumble.” This is perhaps the more preponderant wording.
Fourth: The addition, “He raised his gaze to the sky,” is not sound, because the narrators from Shuʿbah do not agree upon it, and the two of them contradict the reports of the other trustworthy narrators. Moreover, it conflicts with the authentic hadiths—
