- “O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful instead of what You have made unlawful, and enrich me by Your bounty so that I need no one besides You.”
Al-Tirmidhī (4/276), al-Ḥākim (1/538), and Aḥmad (1/153) transmitted it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq al-Qurashī, from Sayyār Abū al-Ḥakam, from Abū Wāʾil, who said:
“A man came to ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, and said, ‘O Commander of the Believers, I am unable to meet my mukātabah payments under my contract for emancipation, so help me.’ ʿAlī said, ‘Shall I not teach you some words which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught me? Even if you owed as much as Mount Ṣayr in dinars, Allah would discharge it for you.’ He said, ‘Certainly.’ He said, ‘Say...’” Then he mentioned it.
Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good, singular hadith.”
Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
I say: The correct view is that its chain of transmission is good, as al-Tirmidhī said, for this ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq—namely, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Kinānah al-ʿĀmirī al-Qurashī, their client—is disputed over. Ibn Maʿīn and al-Bukhārī declared him trustworthy.
