I say: Its narrators are reliable, apart from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shabīb, who is weak; al-Haythamī deemed it defective on his account.
In sum, these are the chains of transmission I have found from these four Companions: al-Sharīd ibn Suwayd—whose chain of transmission is good, notwithstanding the disagreement concerning the Companion from whom it is reported and the Companion to whom it is attributed: some regarded it as a narration of Abū Salamah from him, while others regarded it as a report attributed to Abū Hurayrah, narrated by Abū Salamah himself, with differences in the precise wording of some of its expressions, as will be briefly explained—; Abū Hurayrah—whose chain of transmission is authentic; Abū Juḥayfah—with a weak chain of transmission; and Ibn ʿAbbās—with two chains of transmission from him, and differences as well in some of its wording.
It may be necessary for me to present the esteemed readers with an illuminating summary of those reports, the differences in some of their wording, and an explanation of which versions are stronger and which are weaker, so that readers may distinguish their authentic reports from their weak ones and consider whether they can be reconciled, and thus remain on guard against some who seek to mislead:
First: All the reports agree that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, affirmed that the slave girl was a believer.
Second: They differ regarding the wording of his question to her, peace and blessings be upon him, and her answer, in eight ways:
The first: “Who is your Lord?” She replied, “Allah.” (The first hadith from al-Sharīd, and it is good.)
The second: “Who is your Lord?” She replied, “In heaven.” (The first hadith from Abū Hurayrah, and it is good.)
The third: “Where is Allah?” She pointed toward heaven. (Also the first hadith, through the other route from him, and it is authentic.)
The fourth: “Do you testify that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah?” She replied, “Yes.” (Also the first hadith from the Anṣārī man. It is defective because of a missing link in its chain of transmission.)
