Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

some Arab countries, heedless of his ﷺ statement:

“O people! Every one of you is conversing privately with his Lord, so do not raise your voices over one another in recitation, thereby harming the believers.”

It is an authentic hadith, narrated by Malik, Abu Dawud, Ibn Khuzaymah, and others. It is cited in Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud (1203). Ibn Khuzaymah entitled a chapter (2/190): “Chapter on the prohibition of audibly reciting in prayer when some worshippers are disturbed by the audible recitation of another worshipper.”

For this reason, Imam al-Shafiʿi said in al-Umm (1/110), following the aforementioned hadith of Ibn Abbas:

“I prefer that the imam and those praying behind him remember Allah after completing the prayer, and that they both do so quietly, unless the imam wishes those behind him to learn from him. In that case, he should say it aloud until he sees that they have learned it from him, and then he should lower his voice. For Allah, Most High, says: ‘Do not recite your prayer too loudly or too quietly’ [17:110]—that is, and Allah knows best, supplication. ‘Do not recite too loudly’ means: do not raise your voice; and ‘nor too quietly’ means: not so softly that you cannot hear yourself. I believe that what Ibn al-Zubayr narrated of the Prophet ﷺ declaring Allah’s oneness, and what Ibn Abbas narrated of his proclaiming, ‘Allah is Most Great,’ was only said aloud briefly so that people might learn from him. This is because the majority of the reports that we have recorded—both this one and others—do not mention any declaration of Allah’s oneness or proclamation of ‘Allah is Most Great’ after the taslim. Some reports mention that he observed remembrance after the prayer in the manner I have described, while others mention his departure without mentioning any remembrance. Umm Salamah mentioned his remaining seated, but did not mention that he did so aloud. I believe that he remained only to engage in some silent remembrance.”

I say: This is the height of precision and juristic understanding from this imam. May Allah reward him well.
