Note: Despite the many sources that transmitted this hadith, including Sahih Muslim, al-Hafiz did not recall any of them, attributing it in al-Fath (8/734) only to Ibn Mardawayh! Shaykh al-Aʿzami likewise followed him in his commentary on Zawaʾid al-Zuhd.
The hadith also has a brief supporting narration from Umm Salamah, who said:
Before his death, the Prophet ﷺ would often say: “Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.” I said: “Messenger of Allah, I see you often saying: ‘Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You’?” He replied: “I was commanded to do something,” and he recited: “When Allah’s help and the victory come.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Saghir (p. 141—Hind/1186—al-Rawd) and in al-Awsat (1/291/1/4869), saying: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Salam, Abu Yahya al-Razi, narrated to us; Sahl ibn ʿUthman narrated to us; Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrated to us from ʿAsim al-Ahwal, from al-Shaʿbi, from her. He said: “Sahl alone narrated it!”
He was trustworthy and among Muslim’s narrators, and he was corroborated: Ibn Jarir said: Abu al-Saʾib narrated to us from Hafs, through the same chain.
This Abu al-Saʾib was Salam ibn Junadah. He was truthful, though he sometimes contradicted others, as stated in al-Taqrib; therefore, the chain is authentic.
It has another supporting narration, reported from Ibn Masʿud through his son Abu ʿUbaydah. Al-Tayalisi recorded it (339), and its narrators are trustworthy.
