- “In his final days, he would frequently say: ‘Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him. I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him.’ [Aishah said:] I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, why do I see you so often saying, “Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him. I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him”?’ He said: ‘My Lord informed me that I would see a sign among my ummah, and He commanded me—when I saw that sign—to glorify Him with His praise and seek His forgiveness. I have indeed seen it: “When Allah’s help and the victory come, and you see people entering Allah’s religion in multitudes. So glorify your Lord with His praise and seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance.”’
Ahmad recorded it (6/35): Muhammad ibn Abi ʿAdi narrated to us from Dawud. Rabiʿi ibn Ibrahim also said: Dawud narrated to us from al-Shaʿbi, from Masruq, who said: Aishah said …
Al-Husayn al-Marwazi also recorded it in Zawaʾid al-Zuhd (398/1130): Muhammad ibn Abi ʿAdi narrated to us; Dawud narrated to us … through the same chain.
Muslim (2/50) and Ibn Jarir in his exegesis (30/215) also recorded it. They said: Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to me: ʿAbd al-Aʿla narrated to me: Dawud narrated to us through the same chain. They added: “And the victory means the conquest of Mecca.”
Ibn Jarir then recorded it, as did Ibn Saʿd in al-Tabaqat (2/192–193), through other chains from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, through the same chain but without the addition.
Muslim also recorded it through the route of Abu Muʿawiyah, from al-Aʿmash, from Muslim, from Masruq, through the same chain, with similar wording.
He also recorded it, as did al-Bukhari (4967), through another route from al-Aʿmash, through the same chain, in abbreviated form.
