been uncovered, he would have commanded her to cover it. This is further confirmed by the fact that the verse concerning the outer garment was revealed after the verse of hijab:
“O Prophet! Tell your wives, your daughters, and the believing women to draw their outer garments over themselves. That is more likely that they will be recognized and not abused.” [al-Ahzab 33:59]
Before its revelation, they were not obliged to cover themselves with outer garments, let alone to cover their faces. This is why Zayd saw of Zaynab what he saw before the revelation of the verse of hijab, as mentioned earlier in the hadith of Muslim and others. *
3149—“A man’s voluntary prayer in his home surpasses his voluntary prayer in public, just as a man’s prayer in congregation surpasses his prayer offered alone.”
It was recorded by Abd al-Razzaq in his Musannaf (3/70/4835), and likewise by Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/256), through al-Thawri, from Mansur, from Hilal ibn Yisaf, from Dimrah ibn Habib ibn Suhayb, from a man among the Companions of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, who said … and then mentioned it.
I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic. Its narrators are trustworthy narrators of Muslim, apart from this Dimrah, who was al-Zubaydi of Hims. He was a trustworthy Successor. Its apparent chain stops at the Companion, but it has the status of a hadith attributed to the Prophet, since this is not something that could be said on the basis of personal opinion or independent legal reasoning, as is plainly evident to the scholars.
It has also been narrated as attributed to the Prophet. Al-Tabarani said in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (8/53/7322):
Al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Ma‘mari narrated to us: Ayyub ibn Muhammad al-Warraq narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Mus‘ab al-Qarqasani narrated to us: Qays ibn al-Rabi‘ narrated to us, from Mansur, from Hilal ibn Yisaf, from Suhayb ibn al-Nu‘man, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said … something similar, except that he said:
“Like the superiority of an obligatory prayer over a voluntary one.”
Al-Hafiz attributed it in al-Isabah to al-Tabarani and to al-Ma‘mari in al-Yawm wa al-Laylah, without commenting on it. Al-Haythami said in al-Majma‘ (2/247):
