ibn Muhammad: Yahya ibn Umayr narrated to us; al-Maqburi narrated to us from Abu Hurayrah, relating the same report. He did not say, “from his father,” and he said, “our relatives,” in place of “people of the Quran”; perhaps this is more accurate.
The Abbas ibn Muhammad in question is al-Duri—and he is trustworthy—but I do not think it possible that he heard from Yahya ibn Umayr, for the latter was a Successor of the Successors, whereas the former was born in 185 AH. I therefore think that Khalid ibn Makhlad stands between them, for they listed him among al-Duri’s teachers and among those who narrated from Yahya ibn Umayr.
The hadith has a more complete supporting report, but its chain contains an unidentified narrator and a missing link; for that reason, I cited it in the other book (6300). *
3147—“By Him in Whose Hand is my soul! Had you all gone off one after another, until not one of you remained, the valley would have flooded over you with fire.”
Abu Ya'la narrated it in his Musnad (3/468/1979)—and through him Ibn Hibban (6877, al-Mu'assasah edition): Zakariyya ibn Yahya narrated to us; he said: Hushaym narrated to us, from Husayn, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd and Abu Sufyan, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said:
While the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was delivering the Friday sermon, a trade caravan arrived in Medina. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, rushed toward it, until only twelve men remained with him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then said: …—and he mentioned it. Thereupon this verse was revealed: “When they see trade or diversion, they rush toward it, leaving you standing” [Friday 62:11]. He added: Among the twelve who remained steadfast with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, were Abu Bakr and Umar.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission, all of whose narrators are trustworthy, were it not for the fact that Hushaym practised tadlīs and related it using an ambiguous transmission formula. However, in Muslim (3/10), he explicitly stated that he heard it directly: Ismail ibn Salim narrated to us; Hushaym informed us; Husayn informed us, relating the same report—except that he did not mention the hadith cited in the heading.
