Al-Tabarani also narrated it (12/272) from Ibn Umar, but its chain contains an abandoned narrator.
A similar incident has been reported between Abu Bakr and Rabi'ah al-Aslami, so there is no harm in relating it: *
3145 — “O Rabi'ah, what is the matter between you and al-Siddiq?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, such-and-such happened, and such-and-such happened. He said something to me which I disliked, then he told me, ‘Say to him what I said to you, so that we may be even.’ [But I refused]!” The Messenger of Allah said, “Indeed; do not answer him in kind. Rather, say: ‘May Allah forgive you, Abu Bakr.’”
Ahmad (4/58–59), al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (5/52–53), and Ibn Asakir in al-Tarikh (9/583) narrated it through several routes from Mubarak ibn Fudalah, who said: Abu Imran al-Jawni narrated to us from Rabi'ah al-Aslami, who said:
I used to serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He granted me a piece of land, and he granted Abu Bakr a piece of land. Then worldly prosperity came to us, and we disputed over a cluster of dates from a palm tree. Abu Bakr said, “It is within the boundary of my land,” while I said, “It is within my boundary.” An exchange took place between Abu Bakr and me, and Abu Bakr said something to me which I disliked, then regretted it. He said to me, “O Rabi'ah, answer me with the like of it, so that we may be even.” I said, “I will not do so.” Abu Bakr said, “You must say it, or I shall appeal to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ against you.” I said, “I will not do it.”
He then relinquished the land, and Abu Bakr went to the Prophet ﷺ, while I followed behind him. Some men from Aslam came and said, “May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr! Over what matter is he appealing to the Messenger of Allah against you, when he was the one who said what he said to you?!” I said, “Do you know who this is? This is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq: he was the second of the two, and the venerable elder of the Muslims. Beware lest he turn and see you supporting me against him, and become angry; then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will become angry because of his anger, and Allah will become angry because of their anger, and Rabi'ah will perish.” They said, “Then what do you command us to do?” He said, “Go back.”
