It also escaped his notice—may Allah have mercy on him—that it is found in the narration of Muhammad ibn al-Mubarak al-Suri, who said: Sadaqah ibn Khalid narrated to us ... He then related it with its chain of transmission and text, and it contains both additions.
Abd Allah ibn Ahmad recorded it in Fada’il al-Sahabah (1/240/297), and Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilyah (9/303-304), though the latter omits the second addition. Its chain is authentic, and its narrators are trustworthy.
Abd Allah ibn Yusuf corroborated him, saying: Sadaqah narrated to us likewise. Abu Nu‘aym also recorded it.
Al-Bukhari then recorded it (4640) through another chain from Abd Allah ibn al-Ala’ ibn Zabr, who said: Busr ibn Ubayd Allah narrated to me a similar report. It contains the first addition, with some rearrangement of the wording. Abu Abd Allah—that is, al-Bukhari—said after the hadith:
“Ghamara: he was first in doing good.”
(Note): The wording concerning believing him and supporting him was also narrated in praise of Khadijah, on the authority of Aishah. However, its chain contains weakness; for this reason, I cited it in al-Da‘ifah (6224).
(Benefit): Ibn Hibban recorded it in his Sahih (9/4-5) through Sa‘id ibn Sulayman: Abu Usamah narrated to us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, from Aishah, who said:
“Abu Bakr spent forty thousand on the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from Sa‘id ibn Sulayman—al-Nashiti—who is weak, as stated in al-Taqrib. This is further confirmed by Ibn Sa‘d’s differing from him in al-Tabaqat, where he said (3/172): Abu Usamah Hammad ibn Usamah informed us of it. He did not mention Aishah, nor did he carry it beyond Urwah; thus, it is mursal.
