3144—[O people!] Allah sent me to you, and you said, “You are lying,” whereas Abu Bakr said, “He has spoken the truth.” He supported me with his person and his wealth. Will you not leave my companion alone? (twice) Thereafter, he was not harmed.
Al-Bukhari recorded it (7/18/3661): Hisham ibn Ammar narrated to us: Sadaqah ibn Khalid narrated to us: Zayd ibn Waqid narrated to us, from Busr ibn ‘Ubayd Allah, from ‘A’idh Allah Abu Idris, from Abu al-Darda’, who said:
“I was sitting with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when Abu Bakr approached, holding up the edge of his garment until his knee was exposed. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
‘Your companion has had a dispute.’
He greeted him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, there was something between Ibn al-Khattab and me. I acted hastily toward him, then regretted it and asked him to forgive me, but he refused. So I have come to you.’ He said:
‘May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr!’ (three times)
Then Umar regretted it and went to Abu Bakr’s home. He asked, ‘Is Abu Bakr there?’ They replied, ‘No.’ So he went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, whose face began to grow flushed, until Abu Bakr became concerned. Abu Bakr then knelt and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I was the more unjust!’ (twice) The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then spoke the foregoing words.
Ibn Abi ‘Asim also recorded it with this same chain of transmission in al-Sunnah (2/576/1223), in abbreviated form, without the story and without the words, “Thereafter, he was not harmed,” though it includes the additional wording.
Al-Bayhaqi also recorded it (10/236) in full through another route from Hisham ibn Ammar. It contains both additions—the first and the last. Concerning the latter, al-Hafiz said (7/26): “I have not seen this addition in any narration other than that of Hisham ibn Ammar.”
