for he narrated it from three of his shaykhs, including this Yahya ibn Ayyub!
All those above these three—and al-Tayalisi, the fourth—in the chain are among the narrators accepted by both al-Bukhari and Muslim. Accordingly, the chain may be deemed authentic according to both their conditions.
‘Amr ibn Abi ‘Amr was the client of al-Muttalib, a Medinan. Al-Hafiz said:
“Trustworthy, though he occasionally erred.”
I say: We are safe from any error on his part, for ‘Umar ibn Nubayh al-Ka‘bi corroborated him in narrating it from al-Maqburi.
Al-Tahawi recorded it, and its chain is authentic.
It also has another route from Abu Hurayrah, in an abridged form. Al-Tirmidhi (7/2616) and Ibn Abi ‘Asim in al-Sunnah (2/464/956) recorded it. Al-Tirmidhi said:
“An authentic, singular, good hadith through this route.”
I say: It meets Muslim’s conditions.
Know, my dear brother, that this incident occurred more than once. In this hadith of Abu Hurayrah, it took place after the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had finished the dawn prayer, while the women were in the mosque.
Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri narrated it as follows:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out on Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr to the prayer-ground. He passed by the women and said, ‘O company of women, give in charity …’”
The hadith was reported by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others, and is cited in al-Irwa’ (1/204).
