to weaken his Prophet’s hadith by every possible means, while ignoring a religious truth that is evident to every believer: Allah’s bounty toward His servants. He has expressly stated this in His Book: “Allah is the Possessor of immense bounty,” and, in another verse: “Allah is the Possessor of the immense bounty.”
Moreover, the bounty mentioned in the hadith is corroborated by a report from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him—perhaps it has not reached this critic’s ears because of its recentness! Ali ibn Zayd narrated it from Abu Uthman, who said:
“It was reported to me that Abu Hurayrah said: ‘Allah, Most High, grants His believing servant one million good deeds for a single good deed.’ It so happened that I set out for Hajj or ʿUmrah and met him. I said, ‘A report has reached me from you that you say you heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “Allah, Most High, grants His believing servant one million good deeds for a single good deed.”’
“Abu Hurayrah replied, ‘No. Rather, I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “Allah, Most High, grants him two million good deeds.” Then he recited: “He multiplies it and grants from Himself a tremendous reward.”’
“He then said, ‘When He calls it “a tremendous reward,” who can estimate its magnitude?’”
Ahmad recorded it (2/296 and 521–522), as did others. Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from Ali ibn Zayd—namely Ibn Judʿan—who is weak on account of his poor memory. Al-Dhahabi listed him in al-Duʿafaʾ and said:
“Acceptable in hadith.”
Al-Hafiz said:
“Weak.”
