3139—“Whoever enters one of the marketplaces and says: ‘There is no god worthy of worship but Allah alone, having no partner. To Him belongs all dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is capable of all things,’ Allah will record for him a million good deeds and erase from him a million evil deeds.”
Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Du'a (2/1167/793): Ubayd ibn Ghannam and al-Hadrami narrated to us. They said: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Abu Khalid al-Ahmar narrated to us, from al-Muhajir ibn Habib, who said: I heard Salim ibn Abd Allah ibn Umar say: I heard Ibn Umar say: I heard Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say ... and then cited it.
Abd Allah ibn Ahmad also narrated it in Zawa'id al-Zuhd (p. 214): Abu Bakr narrated it to us with this chain, except that the mention of Salim and Umar has been omitted from it, and it is attributed directly to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. I think this was the work of a copyist, since it is one and the same route of transmission, revolving around Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah.
All the narrators in its chain are trustworthy except al-Muhajir ibn Habib. However, this is a corruption; the correct name is Muhasir. This correct form occurs in the chain of transmission of this hadith in al-Daraqutni’s al-'Ilal (2/50). He was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Hibban, al-Ijli, and al-Haythami, as was explained in the preceding hadith, where al-Hafiz graded its chain as good.
Therefore, a newcomer to this discipline erred when he ventured to declare this hadith weak through all of its routes—of which he counted seven, this being one of them—in a short treatise he published under the title, “Exerting Effort in Examining the Two Hadiths on the Marketplace and Asceticism”; that is, in declaring them both weak. There is no scope at present to discuss his view that they are weak. Rather, I shall confine myself here to discussing what he relied upon in declaring this hadith weak through this chain of transmission, so that readers may see
