Al-Hasan ibn Sahl was Abu Ali al-Juʿfi of Kufa. Ibn Hibban listed him in al-Thiqat (8/177), noting his narration from Abu Khalid al-Ahmar and that al-Hasan ibn Sufyan and others narrated from him. Abu Zurʿah also narrated from him, as recorded in al-Jarh; and Abu Zurʿah narrates only from a trustworthy narrator. Thus, he provides strong corroboration for al-Hasan ibn Hammad al-Hadrami.
The second portion of the hadith is attributed in al-Jamiʿ to Ibn al-Najjar, from Saʿid al-Maqburi in mursal form.
Ibn Abi Shaybah also narrated in al-Musannaf (10/450), through ʿAtaʾ ibn al-Saʾib, from Abu Abdullah al-Jadali, who said:
The Prophet David, peace be upon him, used to say:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a neighbor whose eye sees me and whose heart watches over me: if he sees a good deed, he buries it; and if he sees an evil deed, he spreads it abroad!”
Its narrators are trustworthy, but it is attributed to a Successor, not attributed to the Prophet. *
3138—“O Asad ibn Kurz! You do not enter Paradise by virtue of deeds, but by Allah’s mercy.” [I said: “Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?” He said:] “Not even I, unless Allah takes me into His care, or envelops me in mercy from Him.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it in al-Tarikh (1/2/49), and al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (1/334/1001), through two routes from Baqiyyah, who said: Artaʾah ibn al-Mundhir al-Sakuni narrated to me; he said: Muhasir ibn Habib al-Zubaydi narrated to me from Asad ibn Kurz, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me … and he cited it. The wording is al-Bukhari’s, while the two additions are al-Tabarani’s.
