Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

(Note): Be aware that my assessment of this hadith of Ibn Umar has differed at various times and owing to several factors. When I documented it in Ghayat al-Maram (pp. 40–41), I graded it weak because of Ibn Lahi'ah’s inconsistency in its chain of transmission, as I explained there. I was preceded in grading it weak by al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri in his al-Targhib (2/103–104); consequently, I included it in Da'if al-Jami'.

Then, when I compiled Sahih al-Targhib, I noted that its meaning occurred in a number of hadiths in the chapter. I therefore did not consider it appropriate to include it in Da'if al-Targhib, so I cited it in Sahih al-Targhib (1/529/1076, Maktabat al-Ma'arif), grading it hasan.

Then one of the brethren contacted me, asking about this discrepancy. I answered him along the lines of what has preceded and promised that I would reconsider the matter when I was able to do so.

Now that Allah has made this possible, the authenticity of its chain of transmission has again become clear to me, in light of what had previously appeared to me: namely, that Qutaybah ibn Sa'id’s narration from Ibn Lahi'ah is equal in authenticity to the narration of the 'Abadilah from him, as was indicated earlier in reference to where this is explained. Added to this are those routes of transmission which I had not previously come across, despite the weakness they contain. Thus, I became fully convinced of the hadith’s authenticity, and accordingly decided to transfer it from Da'if al-Jami' to Sahih al-Jami'. All praise is due to Allah for His enabling grace, and I ask Him for more of His bounty.

I mention this, first, in clarification of the truth; second, to discharge my responsibility; and third, in acknowledgement of human incapacity and weakness—and that, as our Lord has said in His Book: “They encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills,” and: “You have been given but little knowledge.” Perhaps this may serve as a lesson to some newcomers to this discipline, who hasten to criticize and issue judgments without making any effort
