Ḥibbān also (9/12/6832), Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (2/547/1151), and al-Bayhaqī in al-Sunan (8/153), from the hadith of Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, who said:
A woman came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he instructed her to return to him. She said, “What if I come and do not find you?”—as though she meant his death. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said … and then mentioned it. *
3118—“You will come upon a man wrapped in a striped cloak, conducting business with people, who is among the people of Paradise.”
It was recorded by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (2/290/1292), al-Ḥākim (3/98), Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil (3/393), and Ibn ʿAsākir in Tārīkh Dimashq (9/155–156), through Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Saʿīd al-Jarīrī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaqīq, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥawālah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said one day … and then mentioned it. He added:
“We came upon ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, wrapped in a striped cloak and conducting business with people.” He said: That is, buying and selling.
The wording is Ibn ʿAdī’s. He said:
“This Saʿīd al-Jarīrī was sound in his hadith, and his hadith is authoritative for those who heard from him before his mental confusion.”
I say: Ḥammād ibn Salamah was among those who heard from him before his mental confusion, as stated in al-Tahdhīb. Thus, its chain of transmission is authentic. Al-Ḥākim said likewise, and al-Dhahabī concurred with him.
It has a supporting report with similar wording, which follows it.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaqīq also has another chain of transmission, narrated from him by Kahmas ibn al-Ḥasan. He said: Haramī ibn al-Ḥārith and Usāmah ibn Khuraym narrated to us—they were engaged in military campaigns—and they related a report to me, while neither of them realized
