Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade a man to sit with part of his body in the shade and part in the sun.

Al-Bazzār recorded it (2/423/2014) and said:

“Ismāʿīl is weak in hadith, and no one corroborated him in it.”

I say: He is the Meccan narrator. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said:

“He is weak in hadith.”

I say: Therefore, he cannot be relied upon as evidence, particularly in view of his contradiction of the others. Thus, the basis is the hadith under discussion and the hadith of Abū Hurayrah.

The hadith has two supporting reports. One is the hadith of Buraydah; both have already been cited under his statement, “Move into the shade,” no. 833. I have included it here only because of this addition: “And he said: ‘It is Satan’s sitting-place.’” This indicates that the prohibition is a matter of devotional observance, not as al-Bayhaqī said after mentioning the hadith of Buraydah:

“It may be that he intended to prevent him from being harmed by the heat of the sun.”

For this explanation has no apparent connection to Satan’s sitting-place. And Allah knows best.

Note: Under the preceding hadith, no. 837, I stated that Ibn al-Munkadir had heard from Abū Hurayrah. This was an error on my part, and I ask Allah to forgive me for it. This correction was among the reasons for documenting it here.

  1. “There are only three things from Paradise on earth: ʿajwah date-palms, awāq that descend into the Euphrates each day from the blessing of Paradise, and the Stone.”

Al-Khaṭīb recorded it in al-Tārīkh (1/55), saying: “The judge Abū ʿUmar al-Qāsim informed us…”
